The term ‘mental health’ refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
Our mental health like our physical health will naturally over time. Importantly our mental health influences our resilience throughout life which affects how we think, feel, grow, learn and respond to life’s many challenges.
Positive mental health is important at every stage of life, from birth through childhood, adolescence and throughout adulthood. Understanding how our mental state impacts our lives is crucial because it significantly influences our physical health, our confidence, our self-esteem, how well we handle our emotions, how well we learn new things, how we reach our goals, how we grow as unique vibrant individuals and how well we sustain meaningful relationships.
Contrary to what many people may think, 80% of Australians will experience “mental health issues” at some point in their lives. Mental health issues can often be managed very effectively with the right support resulting in happier, healthier, successful lifestyles.
“Mental health disorders”, are specific, diagnosable conditions and will affect approximately one in three people in the population, with regional and rural populations often experiencing higher incidences than their urban counterparts. If left untreated “mental illnesses” can progress to seriously debilitating disorders. For this reason early, effective treatment is essential.
